Safe Cruise Travel Tips

By aidentelfer at 2009-08-12 06:00:40
Cruising is usually a little cheaper during the spring or fall. Weather can be uncertain, especially in the fall given many Caribbean destinations could have hurricane seasons during this time. This is something to watch out for. The dry season for Caribbean cruises is during the summer where as the rainy season is during the winter. Other cruise lines have short cruising seasons, such as Alaska cruises which normally run from May to September.

You have the ability to work with a live band on the ship. If you plan on working on ships a great deal you may wish to utilize this lost resource although the way things are changing the idea of having a ‘live’ band is becoming less and less. There was a time when working on ships that my advice would have been if you currently use no music at all, consider the use of the band on the ship, however, with cut backs and so on don’t rely on having a back up band! Most Cruise Director’s will expect "play on and play off" music for you and if the band is available then they often have stock ‘tabs’ that can be used. As a backup I would have all my music on CD or mini disk.

A lot of things on the ship determine the predominant mood on the ship - everything from the size of the ship, the passengers to the ship's decor. There are several cruise ships that target couples looking for an intimate time together and going on one of these may be a good thing to do.
Try and study the layout of the ship you are traveling in either online or at the cruise line office. Whether a mainstream cruise or a luxury one each ship will have a wide variety of accommodation choices. Find out what are the choices of cabins available on the ship you are booking on. Often you will find that a ship has over twenty different categories.

Cruise ships are typically safe for water and food, but if you're planning on any shore excursions, only drink bottled water and try to only eat at reputable and "safe" restaurants. You don't want your cruise vacation tarnished by a bout of food poisoning.

Cruise lines carefully screen their employees, and cruise ship employees are hardworking and honest. However, you should always bear in mind that most cruise ship companies have a strict policy about not allowing crew members to interact with passengers outside their duties. If a crew member invites you back to their cabin, say no firmly but politely and report it to the cruise director.

The best way of ensuring your valuables' safety on a cruise is to leave them at home in the first place! If you still insist on bringing some luxuries then treat them with care. The safe in your room should be sufficient for replaceable items, but if it's something that you simply cannot lose then use the ship's safe - this tends to be a lot more secure than the 'flimsy' room ones. And of course it goes without saying that cruise travel insurance is vital, to make sure that your valuables are covered should the worst happen.
